The New Zealand All Blacks toured Argentina and Uruguay in October and November 1976, winning all nine of their matches. Some members of the team, Andy Haden, Stu Wilson, aka Nectar (Neekta) and others came to an asado at our house in Martinez and actually performed the Haka next to the pool!

“From a New Zealand perspective you were just not used to it,” Mourie recollected. “In the test match at the stadium in Argentina there was a strong military presence, and in each of the corners there was a little group of soldiers inside their sandbags with their guns just sitting there observing what was going on with the crowd.

“It was definitely a bit different.”

“Military rule, guns and adventure.”

How Daddy managed to wangle that, I’ll never know. He also invited Tristan Jones, the famous yachtsman to the house on an earlier occasion, but I’m not sure if I have any photos of him.
